Earlier this week, NASAs Ingenuity Mars Helicopter made aviation history, becoming the first aircraft to make a powered, controlled flight on another world. The 4-pound chopper took off at 3:34 a.m. EDT (12:34 a.m. PDT) and hovered over Jezero Crater for approximately 30 seconds with the Perseverance rover parked and watching nearby.Ingenuity completed its initial flight without any help from the JPL team back home, so it became airborne, ascended to its maximum altitude of 10 feet, drifted over the Martian surface, snapped a few photos, and landed safely on the Martian surface all on its own. After touching down, the helicopter sent the images and data back to Earth via the rover for engineers to analyze. And at 6:46 a.m. EDT, the team received confirmation of the flights success. Now, 117 years after the Wright brothers succeeded in making the first flight on our planet, NASA's Ingenuity helicopter has succeeded in performing this amazing feat on another world, said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. As brief as Ingenuitys flight was, NASA and its helicopter achieved something that the world previously thought was impossible. Congratulations to the team! The world looks forward to what lies ahead Image Credits NASA/JPL-Caltech

The three fastest-spinning brown dwarfs to ever exist were recently discovered by scientists. Previously, researchers measured the spin rates of about 80 brown dwarfs which ranged from less than two hours to tens of hours. Much to the teams surprise, data from NASAs retired Spitzer Space Telescope reveals that all three newly-identified dwarfs complete one full rotation per hour - the quickest time recorded. These substellar objects are roughly the same diameter of Jupiter but are approximately 40 to 70 times more massive and rotate much faster. In comparison, the gas giant spins once every 10 hours. Based on the measurements, this might mean that the largest of the trio spins at more than 60 miles per second (100 km/s) or 220,000 mph/360,000 kph. Fascinating, but this finding has raised a few important concerns for the team. Every object that rotates generates centripetal force. The faster an object spins, the greater centripetal force - a force that can tear a star or planet apart. The team thinks that the three brown dwarfs have already reached their spin limit, beyond which they could destroy themselves. So why havent they already been torn apart? Is there a mechanism stopping them from doing so? Its unclear for now, but the team is most definitely curious to find out. What are your thoughts, Terraformers? Image Credits NASA/JPL-Caltech

Thanks to the Mars Environmental Dynamics Analyzer (MEDA) aboard NASAs Perseverance rover, a team of scientists was able to piece together its first weather report from the Red Planet.Weighing roughly 5.5 kilograms, the instrument comes with some cool specs temperature sensors, a radiation and dust sensor, a relative humidity sensor, a thermal infrared sensor, a wind sensor, and a pressure sensor. These tools will provide researchers with valuable information about the weather conditions on Mars. Approximately one day after Perseverance landed at Jezero Crater, MEDA powered on, and its sensors began taking its first measurements. The initial datasets revealed that it was just below minus 20 degrees Celsius, but after a half hour that temperature dropped to minus 25.6 degrees Celsius; so yes, its pretty cold on Mars. MEDAs radiation and dust sensor showed that at that time, the atmosphere at Jezero was cleaner than the atmosphere at Gale Crater, located 3,700 km away, according to data from Curiositys Rover Environmental Monitoring Station (REMS). MEDAs pressure sensor reported that the pressure on Mars was 718 Pascals, which is close to previous models predictions of the pressure falling somewhere between 705-735 Pascals.Over the next year, MEDA will study the dusty environment; record the temperature; measure the radiation from the sun and space; and analyze cloud formation and wind patterns, helping engineers prepare for the human exploration of the Red Planet.Looking forward to what will be revealed next! An impressive 20-foot-tall rock formation, nicknamed Mont Mercou, is seen here with NASAs Curiosity Mars rover in a recent selfie. The selfie is actually a panorama, composed of 60 images taken by the Mars Hands Lens Imager (MAHLI) on the rovers robotic arm plus 11 images from the Mastcam on Curiositys head. Also pictured here is a new drill hole at a rock sample scientists have dubbed Nontron. The team assigned this area of Mars Nontron-related nicknames because nontronite, a clay mineral relative to Nontron, a village in Southeast France, was previously found here by Mars orbiters. Pretty fitting considering that the region where Mont Mercou stands is what scientists call the transition between the clay-bearing unit and the sulfate-bearing unit at Mount Sharp. This transition site, researchers think, might offer long-sought clues to the Red Planets past. So as part of the mission, Curiositys drill powderized and stored the rock samples from Nontron in an effort to help scientists determine how Mars turned into the barren desert planet it is today. Earth's failure to address impending climate disasters put its residents in great peril. While rampant wildfires and rising sea levels in the pre-space era called for long-term solutions, acceleration of these events meant lives needed to be saved now, but many governments were slow to respond to the crises. Tangled bureaucracy and science denial meant that the fate of millions was left in the hands of brave individuals; thankfully, Tomoya Mukai was one such hero.Initially, Mukai had dreams of winning Olympic gold in shot put; after sustaining a career-ending injury, her sponsors dropped her to focus on more promising athletes. While receiving treatment for her injury, she developed an interest in medicine, and soon began her career as an emergency responder in the north wards of Tokyo. Her instructors quickly recognized her aptitude and passion for rescue ops, assigning her to all crises from minor floods to nuclear meltdowns. She found local authorities far more skeptical of her, but she always managed to put forth plans that more experienced responders had not considered, saving countless lives as a result. When she began leading international teams, natural disasters had become widespread and chaotic, culminating with the ultimate disaster known as The Sundering. Instead of a false personal assessment of Mukai by local governments, she faced something far worse political gridlock. Petty disputes between parties meant that Tomoya rarely received the support she needed; rather than wait for the government's go-ahead, she chose to lead her own team into active floodzones. This action saved even more lives but also landed her in hot water with spiteful leaders.Thankfully, the Horizon Corporation heard about her heroic exploits; Appolo Matiba himself held a press conference with Mukai, offering to fund her rescue campaigns personally. While Tomoya suspects she's being used for PR, she now has leverage not only to guide countless worldwide rescue ops but to fund infrastructure projects in vulnerable communities to guard against future disasters. So long as Horizon keeps footing the bill, Mukai is content to focus on saving everyone while answering to no one.

At the IEEE Aerospace Conference last weekend, experts from The University of Arizona announced their ambitious plan of constructing a doomsday vault on the Moon. The proposed ark will store millions of duplicate seed, spore, egg, and sperm samples to protect against the loss of biodiversity in the event that our planet would be completely annihilated. Think of it as a modern global insurance policy, the team said. Our planet already has a backup though The Global Seed Vault, located in the Svalbard archipelago, but it is not as reliable and secure as it needs to be. Earth is naturally a volatile environment, says researcher Jekan Thanga, so volcanoes, floods, earthquakes, and other catastrophic events pose as serious threats to mankinds only insurance policy. Fortunately, we have a barren moon, not too far away, with a network of lava tubes beneath its surface that could keep our precious genetic cargo safe from calamity. The engineers plan then is to build the facility, powered by solar panels and staffed with robots, in those tubes. The team further explained that the project would require about 250 rockets to transport 50 samples from each of the 6.7 million species to the vault. Pretty daring, but also pretty incredible.Lets hope this Moon Ark will turn into a reality because who knows when a doomsday scenario like The Sundering could happen? What are your thoughts, Terraformers? Image Credit University of Arizona College of Engineering
