When Buzz Sullivan was made Fleet Commander of the UNSA, he provided few personal demands. Perhaps the most notable condition, however, was the inclusion of Sergeant Malakai Folau as a key member of his transition team. Having served with one another in the UN's peacekeeping forces, the two seemed to share a bond that was initially difficult for their new peers to identify. But the answer soon became clear what Sullivan had in strategic foresight Folau more than matched in stout-hearted bravado, and both men knew how to use this to the benefit of uniting soldiers behind a shared cause. This unique partnership was soon put to the test, when the UNSA intercepted reports of an impending pirate attack against the Moon's burgeoning refugee outpost. It contained no defensive provisions to speak of, and the budget to merely sustain power on the station was still tenuous with political leaders back on Earth. Rather than turn his focus away from preparing the Moon settlers for possible aggressions, Sullivan sent Folau to confront the UN Security Council in person. The leading nations' representatives insisted that the Sundering had left them with too few resources to continue funding this spaceborne experiment in the face of a credible threat. But Malakai browbeat and cajoled the sponsors into guaranteeing the security of Luna for the time required to become self-sustaining. He returned to Sullivan with starships and defense contractors in tow, and with their combined leadership over three weeks, the UNSA prepared to meet and ultimately defeat the pirate incursion in what became known as the Siege of Luna. Now a Rear Admiral in the growing UNSA fleet, Malakai is widely recognized as much for his force of personality as for his skill in combat. This makes him overall less diplomatic than his Fleet Commander counterpart, and has earned him the ire of rival interests, as well as one highly televised slap from Vivica Matiba-Cavalcanti. Other naval leaders worry that Folau's inflexibility might lead them into trouble deeper out in the solar system, but when a crisis looms and compromise is not an option, everyone knows who to call.

On Earth, black widow spiders and redbacks are notorious for killing and devouring their mates. In outer space, rare stars called pulsars are known to exhibit similar violent behaviors. Pulsars, sometimes referred to as spider stars, are the crushed cores left behind by massive stars that have exploded. These extremely compact and highly magnetized neutron stars spin rapidly and spew large amounts of radiation, destroying their companion stars in a similar fashion to deadly spiders tearing their partners apart.Nearly three decades have passed since astronomers first discovered these bizarre stars, but recently, three new black widow systems and one redback system were detected lurking in the Milky Way. Using data from the now-retired and collapsed Arecibo-305m radio telescope, researchers also found a rare crossbreed that defies categorization. When a spider star reduces its companion star to significantly less than a tenth of the suns mass, its classified as a black widow pulsar. On the other hand, a redback pulsar is often paired with a larger star with a mass greater than a tenth of the suns mass. This newly discovered hybrid has a companion star with a mass 0.055 times the mass of the sun; a mass too heavy for a black widow star but unusually too small for a redback. Now that the Arecibo telescope is damaged beyond repair, scientists are left wondering what this strange spider star actually is and how it operates. What are your thoughts, Terraformers? During the 237th Meeting of the American Astronomical Society yesterday, scientists announced the discovery of a quasar (a luminous active galactic nucleus) approximately 13.03 billion light-years away from Earth. Whats more is that this particular quasar is home to an immensely supermassive black hole 1.6 billion times more massive than our Sun.Astronomers date the newfound quasar called J0313-1806 to 670 million years after the Big Bang, crowning it as the earliest and

When Yuna Song's parents told her they were taking her out of school in Seoul and emigrating to Venus, it was like having the ground ripped from under her, literally. Ranked first in class out of 1,000 students and captain of her high school volleyball team, she had been incredibly popular amongst her peers and enjoyed the well-earned view from the top. Yuna's father assured her that their generous financial contributions to the Daughters of Gaia would lead to great opportunity for generations to come, but she quickly saw how the primacy of the Rose Queen's family dared not be challenged. Pining for home, she resigned herself to a lonely, powerless existence far from Earth. All of that changed, however, as Song began to learn more about the Gaians and emerge from her shell. Her education with the elders of the Freyja clan revealed to her the galaxy-spanning ambitions of their gospel. The aggressive maneuvers and political machinations needed to rise as a force for humankind all fell into place for Yuna, and her passion slowly grew. Crucially, she also came into contact with Alana Freyja Lee, the untouchable princess born on the day of the Daughters' unveiling. In another life, Yuna imagined the two of them as friends, but as her competitive nature kicked in, she could not see Alana as anything but an impediment to her personal ascendancy. In Song's view, the Blossoming had been the gravest tactical error of the current Gaian regime. Such an aggressive display of force by Admiral Lee and his navy meant that they had lost the element of surprise when dealing with their rivals. Yet Yuna insists that subtler means of controlling and dealing with other factions, including the Sons of Hephaestus, are still on the table. She has already proven her maneuverability among her own people, as those who once resented her family's implicit status among the Freyja clan have since rallied around her as someone with fresh eyes and new ideas. It has yet to be seen whether anyone can challenge the shared authority of the Queen and her War Minister husband, or their much beloved daughter. But Song remains determined, believing her appetite for greatness can propel her anywhere.

Skywatchers are in for a treat this weekend as the annual Quadrantid meteor shower reaches its highest peak. According to the International Meteor Organization, the spectacular fireball display runs until Jan. 12 with an expected hourly rate of 25 meteors, but viewers can observe the most meteors late at night on Jan. 2 until the early hours of Jan. 3. As our planet orbits the Sun, it plows through a stream of debris that asteroid 2003 EH1 left in its orbital path. And every January, Earth travels through the thickest part of the trail, causing the leftover bits of space rock to emit bright flares of light as they burn in our atmosphere. This year, the Quadrantids are competing against a waning gibbous moon that may outshine Saturdays shooting stars. But there is still a good chance for you to enjoy the lightshow. All you need to do is find a dark location away from city lights and look up to see the famous fireballs streaking across the night sky. Pretty decent way to ring in the new year, dont you think?Tell us Terraformers, what are you looking forward to in 2021? As the first research vessels began to land on Mars and the Earth's environment further declined, many Earthlings believed they were on the verge of being abandoned. And as with all critical moments in history, leaders of nations tended to be heavy on rhetoric, but light on solutions. The most effective governing bodies always needed a secret weapon, a behind-the-scenes operative willing to bargain, persuade and even threaten to forward their agenda. Such was the case for the UNSA's ascendance, with Secretary General David Muoz inspiring the populace and Deputy Chief of Staff Layla al-Battani turning words into action. Her swift appointment to Muoz's first administration was met with a mixture of skepticism and audible groans. While many confused her for a political outsider since she'd so long avoided the spotlight, those in the know recognized Layla as the unyielding hand behind Muoz's pre-UNSA political career. Her colleagues feared her appointment meant that heads would roll in the organization, and that previous political promises would soon go cleverly compromised. What happened instead is that al-Battani successfully gathered up the world's greatest experts in sociology and governance, and built their loyalty around not just Muoz, but an ideal the advocacy of human life over profit, and the preservation of Earth and its people as a condition of the UNSA's growing space program. Of course, those who disagreed were quickly dismissed from Layla's inner circle, with no shortage of colorful language.Throughout their decades-long political careers, rivals sought to blame both Muoz and al-Battani for Earth's continuing decline. But those with an eye towards facts knew that Layla's decisive hand had repeatedly steered the planet away from true disaster. And when a time of immense crisis known as The Sundering occurred in an instant, her peers recognized that there was no one else to turn to. Though she cleverly avoids the headlines and is unafraid of making enemies, few are willing to deny that al-Battani, the true force behind the UNSA, could be humanity's best hope.

In 2010, scientists discovered two massive blobs spewing highly energized gamma-rays at the center of the Milky Way. Each bubble extends approximately 25,000 light-years above and below our homes galactic plane, together stretching a distance of 50,000 light-years. While unraveling the mystery behind the Fermi Bubbles origin, astronomers unexpectedly found more strange, cosmic structures within the twin orbs.On December 9, scientists announced the discovery of the largest Fermi-like structures yet the eROSITA Bubbles. These newly identified balls of gas are not nearly as hot or energetic as the Fermi Bubbles, but are just as big and share other similar properties. The eROSITA Bubbles measure 45,000 light-years in length, have a similar hourglass shape, and are pinned to the center of our galaxys disc. The similarities suggest that the two pairs of blobs are physically related.Based on what we know about blackholes and the vast amounts of energy they emit, its likely that the eROSITA Bubbles emerged from the same powerful explosion from the supermassive blackhole Sagittarius A* that created the Fermi Bubbles millions of years ago. According to co-author Andrea Merloni, "...scars left by such outbursts take a very long time to heal. This explanation holds up, but there is a lot of information we dont know.Scientists are hoping to find definitive answers as the Fermi Gamma-ray Space Telescope continues its mission. Like them, we are excited to see what they might discover in the new year. Image Credits MPE/IKI
