If what the Daughters of Gaia claim proves true, that the galaxy faces a new destiny in their hands, then Alana Freyja Lee is at the center of that destiny. Groomed for leadership from birth by her parents, venerated Rose Queen Rebecca Freyja O'Rourke and illustrious Admiral Zhou Xi Wang-mu Lee, few in her time bore such expectation on their shoulders. But fears that Alana may not inherit the conviction and aptitude of her parents were quickly laid to rest, as she proved not only a devoted student of Veriditas, but a natural leader in her own right who took charge of frontline surveying expeditions as an eminently wise teenager. The Queen saw that she could be tasked with more, to be the voice of her gospel for a new generation. In her early adulthood, Lee received her most important assignment to date leading a delegation on a trip to Earth, a planet she had never set foot on. Their mission was one of goodwill, offering Gaian terraforming expertise to revitalize desolate lands impacted by the Sundering. As fate would have it, she soon met Neil Jansson, newly-arrived on a visit from Mars for his own, more personal reasons. The two sat squarely on opposing sides of the ideological spectrum, and yet in this rare instance they found themselves focused on the same goal to revive and restore the natural splendor of a devastated Earth. Through their shared efforts they grew close for a time, as each found themselves unexpectedly drawn to the other... but despite their half-acknowledged bond, when neither would yield to the other's beliefs, eventually both went their separate ways.In her quiet moments traveling back across the void, Lee often remembered her time on Earth with the rugged, charming Hephaestian. She knew her work as the newly-appointed Vicereine of the Daughters of Gaia would cement her family's legacy, and it consumed her waking hours. Yet she will always wonder what more could be achieved if their petty squabbles could instead have given way to unlikely kinship. Soon enough, her parents put her in charge of the experimental automated system known as Project Ishtar, which would lead to another fateful encounter...

Recent findings published in the Journal of Geophysical Research Planets suggest that sprites or elves could be frolicking in Jupiters upper atmosphere. Sprites, formally known as transient luminous events or TLEs, are jellyfish-shaped electrical discharges, triggered by lightning strikes. Elves, short for Emission of Light and Very Low Frequency perturbations due to Electromagnetic Pulse Sources, are similar to sprites but look like flat, glowing disks. NASAs Juno spacecraft made it possible for scientists to observe what appears to be either sprites or elves on another planet for the first time.Occurring up to 60 miles above thunderstorms on Earth, sprites light up the night sky for a few milliseconds before disappearing. They feature a central orb, 15 to 30 miles wide, with tendrils extending from them. Elves, in contrast, cover a much wider region, spanning up to 200 miles. Both of these phenomena emit a reddish light because of the nitrogen in our atmosphere. But since Jupiters upper atmosphere is mostly made up of hydrogen, TLEs look pink or blue.Juno detected 11 outbursts since it arrived at Jupiter. Evidence suggests that these outbursts were not just huge lightning bolts, but rather, they could have either been sprites or elves. First, each of the flashes only lasted for a few milliseconds. Second, they were found 186 miles above Jupiters water clouds, too high for lightning to form. Lastly, Junos Ultraviolet Imaging Spectrometer (UVS) discovered hydrogen emissions coming from the flashes - all of which are common properties of TLE's."We're continuing to look for more telltale signs of elves and sprites every time Juno does a science pass," said Juno scientist Rohini Giles. "Now that we know what we are looking for, it will be easier to find them at Jupiter and on other planets. And comparing sprites and elves from Jupiter with those here on Earth will help us better understand electrical activity in planetary atmospheres." Terraformers, share your thoughts about this fairytale finding with us down below! Image Credits NASA/JPL-Caltech/SwRI

Ayzia Aoyama, like many young people, struggled to find her place in the world. The sprawling complexities of the interplanetary age, and the growing expectations placed on her generation, paralyzed her with indecision. But she believed in applying the scientific method to any situation, and knew that the only means of forging a career and an identity for herself would be to test what post-grad opportunities were available, beginning with an internship on Venus with the Horizon Corporation. It was on Venus that Ayzia's natural prowess in engineering came into full view. Horizon Corp simply sought pressure-safe hab units built from the company model, but Ayzia brought to her work a creative flair which resulted in Venus' first publicly available luxury homes. It also led to her first full-time job offer, but when Ayzia reviewed Horizon's revised schematics, she noted an aggressive cost-cutting of materials and amenities which fundamentally undermined her design. Deciding the corporate life may not be for her, Ayzia then managed to sneak her way in among the newly-emerged Daughters of Gaia, on the other side of the planet. The Gaians were far less interested in long-term hab designs, instead seeking the same means of protecting their equipment from Venus' crushing pressure for the centuries it may take to terraform the planet. Sadly, Ayzia was once again put off by the unyielding agenda of this faction, which sought to zealously apply her inventions to the task of transforming worlds, regardless of the risks and what might be lost in the process.Ayzia feared she may be trapped, but a chance encounter with a fellow innovator gave her a new trajectory. Famed engineer Olivia Stein arrived to consult with the Gaians on heat regulation, and discovered in Ayzia a kindred spirit who agreed that for science to advance, it cannot be shackled to any one religious perspective, nor dulled by corporate disinterest. The two took off together for Far-Future Institute HQ the next day, and while Ayzia knew this may just be another step on her journey, she clung to the hope that she had finally discovered her place in the galaxy as a member of the FFI.

The Moon is slightly wet, according to scientists. Two studies published in Nature Astronomy recently confirmed there is water on the surface. NASAs Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA), a modified Boeing 747SP airplane that holds a 106-inch reflecting telescope, is responsible for this remarkable finding. Flying up to an altitude of 45,000 feet, it enabled researchers to observe the Moon in ways ground telescopes could not. The flying observatory used in

Rex Jansson never believed in causes much, his sole focus being the love of his wife Katrin and their two children, Neil and Pim. Kat, a wanderer at heart, suggested that they seek their fortunes as miners on the frontier of Mars. Rex expected that only hard work would await them, but it was honest work and he knew they could find happiness anywhere. That steady comfort lasted five years, until a land dispute broke out between local settlers and the newly-arrived Daughters of Gaia, who had laid claim to the frosty plains of Acidalia Planitia for bioengineering experiments, and had already begun erecting their machinery. The miners knew this would destroy their way of life, and Kat decided to join them in confronting the Gaians in mass protest, leaving Rex at home with the kids. What happened next is the subject of much dispute. The few surviving miners reported that the Gaians opened fire on the densely-packed demonstrators before resorting to even more drastic measures. The Gaians insist that the agitators acted first, attacking the terraforming machinery and setting off a series of explosions. What is certain is that within minutes, the gentle slopes of Acidalia were littered with the bodies of a few dozen Gaian soldiers, and almost a thousand Martian miners, including Kat Jansson. In the wake of the slaughter, Rex became a changed man. Already familiar with Te Hau Arataki's infamous manifesto Ancient Gifts, Rex began to associate with increasingly radical elements of the Martian underground. Through Te Hau's teachings he came to regard the Gaians' actions as crimes not just against humanity, but against the planet itself. Soft-spoken but determined, adaptable but unyielding, Rex became the face of Gaian oppression, and the rallying point for a growing movement of intense anti-Gaian sentiment. Despite the strain it put on his relationship with Neil and the anger and extremism that was rapidly growing in Pim, Rex would not be swayed from his cause. And when diplomacy finally broke down and the Kaitiaki rose up in revolution, they did so under the command of Rex Jansson.

For the first time ever, NASAs Origins, Spectral Interpretation, Resource Identification, Security, Regolith Explorer (OSIRIS-REx) spacecraft performed a Touch-and-Go (TAG) sample-retrieving operation on an ancient asteroid 200 million miles away. The near-Earth asteroid, known as Bennu, is not only conveniently located, but is also well-preserved in a vacuum of space. Scientists believe this primordial, carbon-rich artifact that dates billions of years likely contains other organic molecules that make up the basic ingredients for life. Multiple analyses of the sample collected by OSIRIS-REx would confirm the presence of such life-forming compounds on Bennu and offer clues to Earths origin. At 1:50 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, the agencys probe fired its thrusters to remove itself from the asteroids orbit and began its slow descent to the surface. With its 11-foot robotic arm called Touch-and-Go Acquisition Mechanism (TAGASM) extended, OSIRIS-REx carefully navigated through a rocky obstacle course that included a massive two-story-building-sized boulder known as Mount Doom. After four hours, much to the teams relief, the spacecraft eventually reached the sample collection site Nightingale, where it blasted the surface with nitrogen gas, causing dirt and pebbles to disperse.NASAs goal was to retrieve at least 60 grams of rubble from Bennus surface. Unfortunately, it may take up to a week to analyze the data and calculate the actual mass. Should there be enough of the sample, the OSIRIS-REx team will remotely command the spacecraft to depart Bennu and return to Earth by 2021. If not, they will try again in January.A piece of primordial rock that has witnessed our solar systems entire history may now be ready to come home for generations of scientific discovery, said Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASAs Science Mission Directorate in Washington. The thought of holding a piece of our cosmic past in our hands, itself, is exciting. Though the team still has yet to determine the success of the mission, their historic attempt is certainly one to remember. Congratulations to NASA! Image Credits NASA/Goddard/University of Arizona
