The march of progress tends to promote pure utility, which often threatens the art and proud traditions of humanity's history. So much of the early terraforming age was built on mere survival that many, particularly non-dominant cultures across Earth, feared that their customs would be lost, scattered and forgotten in the emptiness of space. And while the scientists and spacefarers did little to reassure them, a rising star of the Horizon Corporation named Ida Ayu Laksmi Dewi saw an opportunity to appeal to customers worldwide by celebrating their rich heritage.Dewi grew up on Bali, an island for which tourism made up a significant chunk of the economy. This is owed not only to the island's beautiful beaches and landscapes, but also to its many temples and cultural customs which have delighted visitors for centuries. Ida served as a tour guide early in her career, and was thus instilled with pride and an abiding love for her homeland. After some time she sought her own travel, but rather than opting for the cultural hotspots of the Western world such as New York or Paris, Dewi sought out the hidden gems of smaller nations such as Nepal, Peru, and Ethiopia. She became enamored with the idea of giving these countries an international "marketing makeover" to boost their profiles among would-be travelers, and while passing through Mombasa she was put in touch with Horizon CEO Appolo Matiba, who took quite a shine to her ideas and enthusiasm. As a Director of Travel & Tourism for Horizon Corp, Dewi promoted universal appreciation of the customs, foods, and architecture of international cultures which had gone overlooked for generations, and in doing so, boosted the local economies of those nations. She'd assumed this would be her life from now on, but Nubia Matiba approached her with a very unexpected proposition to take charge of the cultural heritage programs in new Horizon settlements throughout the solar system. It took great pains to leave behind the planet she had spent a lifetime celebrating, but as Horizon's new VP of Cultural Preservation, Dewi plans to ensure that the traditions of the past are guided to new worlds, and into the ever-changing future.

Just a few days before Christmas, stargazers will look up to the night sky and find what some astronomers call a Christmas Star shining brightly. What appears to be a star at first glance isnt actually one, but rather the mighty gas giant Jupiter and the ringed-world Saturn in alignment.Every 20 years or so, the two largest planets in our solar system inch towards each other during an event known as a great conjunction. Throughout the month of December, skywatchers can s

In spite of their seemingly singular focus, the sacred mission of the Daughters of Gaia is twofold to worship and spread life to barren planets, and to simultaneously make those planets suitable for long-term human settlement. Balancing those agendas presents a unique challenge, as humanity has proven stubborn at best, self-destructive at worst when it comes to wasting Earth's natural gifts. Their leaders knew since departing Venus that claiming custody of new worlds would require a brand new approach to modern living among the flora and fauna they'd create. Thankfully, their own John Baltis Neherua is more than up to the task.A self-proclaimed "bio-architect," Neherua specializes in designing, growing, and carefully shaping organic structures for the purpose of creating lasting shelters. He was first inspired by centuries-old Earth dwellings which were built in harmony with their natural surroundings, such as Fallingwater and Casa Mil. These examples of organic architecture heavily informed his early career, but he became enamored with the belief that an expert bio-engineer could actually sculpt living domiciles from scratch, to be grown and finalized as the planet itself first came to life. The Rose Queen was more than eager to test this theory on newly claimed worlds, and sure enough, by the time Europa first blossomed, John had successfully produced hundreds of organic shelters across its surface, with minimal man-made components to shield against the moon's more unpredictable elements.Neherua is separate from his Gaian colleagues in his admiration for the Sons of Hephaestus, for they too see themselves as stewards of fragile worlds, with no patience for waste or haphazardness. But the ideological chasm that separates them is one he cannot cross, for his life's work is in proving that humanity can achieve oneness with nature, so long as these stewards recognize this enduring obligation. By claiming ownership of not just the worlds themselves, but of the native life birthed by Gaian ingenuity, John knows that an everlasting symbiosis can be achieved.

At the center of the Milky Way Galaxy lies a supermassive black hole, known as Sagittarius A*. This extremely large black hole is approximately 4.2 million times more massive than the Sun. Recently, experts from the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan announced that Earth is much closer to Sagittarius A* than we previously believed. In 1985, the International Astronomical Union placed our planet 27,700 light-years away from the supermassive black hole. Through 15 years of precise measurements, scientists from the NAOJ were able to update that value and pinpoint the current position and velocity of 99 objects, including Earths. As part of the Very Long Baseline Interferometry Exploration of Radio Astrometry (VERA) Project, the new catalog indicates that our home is actually 25,800 light-years away from Sagittarius A* and is traveling at 227 kilometers per second, 7 km/s faster than its original speed of 220 km/s.Youre probably wondering, should we be worried? Absolutely not. The recent data does not suggest that we are spiraling towards the gigantic black hole. Plus, Sagittarius A* is not close enough to consume anything in our solar system, so there is no need for concern. According to the NAOJ, the newly updated map simply helps us better understand the overall structure of the Galaxy and our place in it.What a pretty interesting observation! Imagine if we implemented black holes into the game though. Let us know your thoughts, Terraformers! Image Credits NAOJ

World-spanning catastrophes have the tendency to impact Earth's poorer countries hardest. From his trading office in coastal Mombasa, Horizon Investments co-owner Appolo Matiba could plainly see that aid from world governments in response to the Sundering would be insufficient to rescue Kenya long-term. So in the midst of what other men of means viewed as unavoidable disaster, Appolo chose to invest in an uncertain future by building up Kenya's spacefaring infrastructure, thus seizing an opportunity that would uplift his countrymen, his business, and himself.Matiba began by carefully studying the aging layouts of Cape Canaveral and Baikonur to inform his strategic real estate purchases in rural Mombasa County. The region's close proximity to Earth's equator made it a more ideal location for space launches than any other spaceport yet in existence. Matiba knew that, more than simply an evacuation platform from a struggling Earth, a state-of-the-art facility would allow the launch of machinery to help combat the ongoing crisis, as well as provide a landing place for much-needed materials gathered from off-world. As his plans unfolded, Matiba took even bolder steps by buying up more shares in his investment firm, eventually buying out his former partner to become the sole owner of the company. Despite doubts and derision from his international rivals, Matiba's gamble paid off, turning Kenya into the primary hub of all global space operations, an industry fully controlled by the newly minted Horizon Corporation. With his company, nation, and home planet in a much better position than decades prior, and with his daughter Vivica successfully trading on the family name with Earth's press, Matiba has turned his sights towards the unclaimed frontier of the Red Planet. With Mars populated only by science stations at the time of Horizon's first launches, Matiba knows it's only a matter of time before the unambitious hands of Earth's governments build a web of bureaucracy across the planet's surface. Horizon's new mission is clear to build a network of private spaceports on Mars and planets beyond, and to make these worlds habitable, and therefore profitable.

As if the environmental ravages of the Sundering presented too small a challenge, the devastation of widespread diplomatic collapse also led to historic distrust of storied Earth institutions such as the United Nations. When the international union first announced the formation of its own space agency at the height of the crisis, many assumed it would be used to shuttle the wealthy elite off a dying planet. Fortunately for the UNSA, newly elected Secretary General David Munoz
