The troops moved towards the village in a steady march and Ayrin headed to the mansion.Even through the snow storm, she could hear the terrified screams from inside the house. Ayrin saw Neville, dressed only in his nightgown, clumsily running out of the gates. She darted to meet him, but at the next moment, the storm stopped, materializing in the shape of a tall woman with an ice staff in her hand. She landed right in front of Neville and touched her staff to his heart. Neville staggered and then turned into a grotesque hunk of ice with a vaguely human outline. The next moment, she dashed towards Ayrin.Unintimidated, Ayrin pulled two fiery-colored flasks from her cloak and downed hers in one go, giving the other one to Doria. A flaming aura surrounded them like a halo. Ayrin unsheathed her sword and sprinkled the last few drops from the flask on it. The blade suddenly began to burn with a bright flame. Ayrin charged, and as soon as the ice golem was within her reach, she slashed across its chest with a precise strike. The burning sword quickly melted its icy armor. She noticed a small tear rolling down the Frozen Queen's cheek. In that moment Ayrin knew that her daughter was still alive. That gave her strength. She slowly rose to her feet and, limping, stepped close to her. The Frozen Queen almost seemed lost, unsure of what was happening. She took a step back. The next moment, she exploded in a fit of rage, swung her staff, and cast a swirling stream of sharp, deadly snowflakes towards Ayrin. The fire around Ayrin had begun to die out, and some of the snowflakes got through it, leaving new wounds in her flesh, and tearing her armor and clothes. Ayrin, no longer moved by rage, seemed indifferent to the pain and slowly drew closer."No, it can't be Your daughter is long dead!" the Frozen Queen shouted, her voice filled with rage and desperation, and she put all of her power into the snowflake spell.In spite of all this, Ayrin kept moving closer. Her fondest memories of her beloved daughter gave her almost supernatural strength. All this time, the Frozen Queen had been backing off, without even realizing it. She eventually stopped abruptly, her back touching the wall of the Malbrock mansion. The more she understood that Kate was resisting the ice enchantment, the weaker the force of the spell became. Finally, Ayrin was within arm's reach.Upon seeing her face, bloodied and frostbitten, but still smiling, the Frozen Queen unexpectedly uttered "Mom" With what was left of her strength, Ayrin stepped forward and put her hand right on the Queen's heart. The Frozen Queen shrieked in pain, as if her body was being pierced by thousands of white-hot needles. Ayrin laughed. "Spare your legs. The girls and I have come to" She didn't quite know how to finish the thought, but Neville quickly figured it out."My Lady, I understand. We're always happy to see you and your family! Doria, Kate, is that you? You've grown so much! True princesses indeed! Please, let's head inside. Can I offer you a cup of tea, or maybe something stronger?.." He fussed about, alternating between addressing Ayrin and her daughters. The servants were given the order to unharness and feed the dogs."Mom, mom, can Doria and I play outside?" the younger Kate asked in a quiet tone."Of course, sweetie, have fun. Just don't go too far from the house!" Ayrin warned her, hinting at Neville that the girls needed someone to keep an eye on them. Having understood her implication, Neville ordered his guards to not let the girls out of their sight.Just as Ayrin and Neville disappeared behind the doors of Malbrock's mansion, the girls started playing, laughing, and throwing snowballs at each other. Doria's snowball struck Kate right in the face. The cold snow burned her face and the girl started crying loudly, limply sinking down into the snow. Doria ran to her sister and wiped the snow off her little face."You're always bullying me, alwa-a-ays!" Kate cried, sobbing. "Why-y-y?""I'm sorry, Kate, I didn't mean it... I'm calling mom!" Doria replied with regret in her voice and ran inside the house.Kate sat in the snow, crying and remembering all her childhood grudges against her older sister how the latter always tried to please their mom, all the while laughing at her younger sister's failures and never showing her any affection. She was almost unable to breathe because of all the tears, which were freezing her face even more in the winter wind.Suddenly, something small and dazzlingly bright like moonlight fluttered in front of her. She stopped crying and dried her face with her hands. In a flash, something wonderful appeared before her eyes a small snowy bee, shining with radiant light-blue light. It didn't buzz like a regular bee would, but still effortlessly fluttered its frost-covered wings, making a soft flapping sound. Kate watched the strange creature, fascinated. She tried to touch the bee, but as soon as her hand came close, the bee quickly zipped to the side and hovered there. Kate tried again. The bee moved once more, this time farther away. The next moment, Kate was chasing the bee, not thinking about anything other than catching it. The bee flew around the house and led the girl away into the grove of pine trees a hundred or so yards away from the mansionHaving headed another hundred yards into the woods, the bee stopped abruptly and rose several yards higher. Kate desperately tried to jump and catch it. All of a sudden, right from the bee itself, there came a charming female voice. It felt like it was passing through her, right into her heart, and a chilling sensation enveloped girl's body."Hello, innocent child. What is your name?" "I'm Kate" replied Kate slowly, captivated by the bright sky-blue light in front of her. "What a beautiful name, oh, innocent child Tell me, do you want to catch me? And to boast that you've done something that nobody else has? To prove yourself in the eyes of other people?" the bee sang in the same charming, but cold voice. "Yes Yes, I want that more than anything" Kate replied, as if in a trance. "Then come to me and I will show you your true potential" spoke the soothing voice.The bee slowly started coming down towards the ground. Kate felt her legs give out under her and she settled down on the cold snow. The bee kept getting lower. Kate tried to hold out her hand towards it, but her hands felt too heavy. Finally, the bee slipped right inside the little girl's heart, immediately turning her into blue ice. Kate wanted to scream from pain or surprise, but couldn't. Thick snow started falling down from the sky.Somewhere far away, Ayrin's cries could be heard. A strong wind started blowing. Kate turned around and felt her body rise up from the ground and dissolve into the blizzard. A tear ran down her cheek and immediately froze.

Gusts of howling hurricane wind, like ghostly arms, enveloping every mile in their snowy embrace, the open embrace of the Frozen Queen.This isn't the kind of snow we're used to seeing during a regular winterfluffy, almost weightless, melting on our palms and cheeks, as if cloaking them in a light blanket. No, this snow is entirely different. Even the snowflakes can cut your skin with their thin six-pointed needles. This snow is a weapon, a murderous one, and it serves only one creature in this worldthe Frozen Queen.This war started long before anything our historians can rememberthe battle between ice and fire has been going on for centuries. Few in the Total Battle Kingdoms know the truth about what exactly happened back then, many years ago. And only the myths and legends that are recounted by minstrels can shine a light on those events.The wind kept howling above their heads, as whirlwinds of ice and snow swept across the fields. Some believed that this howling was, in fact, the moans of the thousands of people who died in the last grand battle of the heroic age, when Winter first appeared.You could see them behind the wall of snowthe ice warriors, marching from the north under a white curtain made from slivers of ice. It struck their faces, but the Iceborn didn't turn awayice was their power, their life, their truth. The ranks of the Queen's warriors were bolstered with the inhabitants of the cities that had stood in her way. The most cowardly became Goblins, pawns in her countless army, while the bravest, on the other hand, became Frozen knightsthe Frozen Queen herself gave them a piece of ice from her crown and it pierced the warrior's heart, consuming him and bending him to its will. "We are destined to win, My Liege," says the Frozen Queen, addressing the void, and her laugh shakes the ground. "They can't stop us. And when the war is over, this world, our world, will be reborn from ice. We were born of ice and to ice we will return." The words could be heard in the swirling blizzard that enveloped everything in its path. Fields, forests, mountains, entire citieseverything disappeared under the thick layer of ice. This was true ice, which can't be melted by anything, as long as the Frozen Queen lives.Alrick's city was no exceptionall the citizens had become the Queen's warriors, and those who had managed to hide in the deepest dungeons had frozen and turned into lifeless statues, similar to the ones that artisans carve for Christmas. And only one messenger, sent out well before nightfall, managed not to be turned into an inhuman hunk of ice. He was the only hope now.Alrick curled up in a shallow cave, pressing his knees to his chest. Breathing in the cold air was too painful. He can't feel his arms or legs now, and he has even stopped shivering from the cold. No strength left for that.He gave up. The Frost will take his heart and it will all be over.And only a small flicker of hope, the belief that Dustan managed to get away isn't allowing him to lose himself completely. He believes that he won't become just another of the Frozen Queen's warriors and will be able to return to his family.

It seemed as though humans had brought nature's wrath down upon themselves. This year's winter was especially cold and unrelenting. None of the old folks could remember weather this bad in their lifetime. The wind whipped up just as quickly as it subsided. It thrashed like a ferocious beast that had broken free from its leash, snapping at everything in its way. Nothing could survive unscathed, neither decrepit hovels nor merchant stands, neither workshops nor taverns the wind mercilessly tore off the shutters from the windows, broke signboards and carried them away. It violently bent and broke off tree branches, leaving behind only bare, solitary trunks. The sky was shrouded in dark clouds, which was unusual for this time of year. An endless torrent of snow fell from them. Caught up by the strong wind, the snow beat against the windows of homes, swept through the streets, and settled on the rooftops, adding to the ever-growing snowdrifts as soon as the wind abated. The City was slowly drowning under the blanket of snow. On Christmas Eve, to everyone's delight, the rough weather eased off. The snow finally stopped and the sky cleared up. Little by little, the City was coming back to life. In the Castle, the preparations for Christmas dinner were in full swing, and this year's feast was expected to be especially rich and generous. Ayrin loved participating in preparing holiday gatherings and this year was no exception. She sent out invitations ahead of time. She single-handedly drew up an elaborate menu and picked out the decorations for the Castle. The kitchen had been buzzing with activity since early morning; there was a lot to be done. Ayrin woke up early. She'd had nightmares that night and got up in the morning with a pulsing pain in her temples. "How fortunate that I gave all the necessary instructions for the feast yesterday," thought Ayrin, standing in front of the window in her gown and rubbing her temples, trying to alleviate the pain. Resting her forehead on the cold glass, the queen felt a modicum of relief, and as she gazed into the snowy landscape outside, she became lost in her own thoughts... A knock on the chamber door brought her back to reality. "Please wait a moment," the queen replied and hurriedly slipped into a robe. Ayrin approached the dressing table to make herself look presentable. As soon as her morning routine was complete, she settled down behind the desk and asked the guards outside to let the visitor in. A young servant entered. He had come to report that, at dawn, a messenger had ridden into the Castle, carrying a letter from the Malbrock family, saying that they would not be able to join the Christmas festivities because of the death of their newborn child. The whole family was in mourning and it was not the appropriate time for holiday spirit. Neville, the head of the family and a close friend of the queen, was especially overcome with grief. Ayrin raised her eyes and saw the servant still standing there. She thanked him for the news and let him go.Ayrin couldn't shake the feeling that something was off. The news of the Malbrock family only worsened her suspicions and now the queen clearly felt an ever-growing uneaseIn the meantime, the day went as planned and almost all the food for the holiday feast was ready. Guests kept arriving at the Castle. A friendly group gathered at the table. Ayrin didn't like strangers at family gatherings, so she invited only those closest to her Meriones, Thaddeus, Haemon, Alrick, and their families. All of thembrothers and sisters in armshad more than once come to one another's aid in battle. Alrick and his son were a little late.Children were playing by the fireplace, occasionally tugging on the colorful decorations on the Christmas tree. Doria glanced at them patronizingly and a barely noticeable smile hovered over her lips. Meanwhile, a lively conversation was unfolding at the table. "Ha-ha-ha! Well, I can't say I'm surprised that the story struck a nerve with the old man! Doria's face turned almost crimson from embarrassment. "As luck would have it, the bard had an interesting story to tell, about the origins of winter and ice in our lands.""And what's that about? The same fantasy as the story about Maximus with a pumpkin for a head?" Haemon laughed."Watch your mouth, old man. That fantasy took the lives of too many of my warriors," replied Thaddeus menacingly, with his eyes glaring.Haemon, who hadn't been in that battle, realized he'd said too much and went quiet for a moment."Our warriors, friend, ours. Old Haemon was stuck in the portal tower, busy flirting with young apprentices, ha-ha-ha!" said Meriones, who was already tipsy, in order to break the tension. "You owe us a considerable debt, brother," he hinted at the flustered Haemon."No doubt, friends! I wasn't able to answer Alrick's call in time and now I owe all of you doubly. You protected us, our homes, and our children. So let's drink to their future!" declared Haemon, raising his inlaid cup high."And to the wisdom the spirits may give to our children in choosing that future for themselves and for their families' honor!" Ayrin added, directing a cursory glance at Doria.Suddenly, red from embarrassment and now anger as well, Doria slammed her cup on the table loudly."You're insufferable! How long are you going shame me regarding matters of the heart, mother!? It's always the same, and you'd never say anything like this to Kate!.." yelled Doria angrily, before stopping, realizing too late that she'd said too much.Ayrin went pale as memories of fruitless searching and loss, all barely locked away, flooded back into her mind All of a sudden, the door to the chamber swung open and a messenger, his legs stiff from the cold wind and unable to hold him any longer, collapsed onto the marble floor. He looked like hed been lucky to escape from some fierce battle. The guards came running after him into the room. Doria gestured to them to help the guest. He was lifted up. The messenger saluted and, addressing queen Ayrin with his lips trembling from the cold, declared:"Your Majesty, I'm a messenger from Lord Alrick. It's all true!.. The City is buried under snow and ice due to the cold winds and magic her magic the Frozen Queen herself!" The messenger sank to the marble floor again, shaking.The table fell deadly silent. The words reached Ayrin from afar, as if her mind was shrouded in a thick veil of fog

The palace soldiers and traveling warriors waited for the winter to come with a singular, common goal bringing home the winner's trophies from the Arena Cup. It has been held for a hundred years now, ever since Ayrin's grandfather, a famous king of these lands, found a mention of a tradition of warriors fighting at the end of a year to prove their strength and earn the reputation of a noble knight.In winter, all campaigns in other kingdoms ended, and these fights were the only source of entertainment for a common soldier. But because of this year's strong winds and heavy snowstorms, the arenas, not designed for such weather, were covered in a thick layer of ice and snow, and the winds had decorated the walls with intricate patterns that vaguely resembled a crown.But despite all the attempts to cancel the tournament, the people weren't going to break the tradition on its 100th anniversary year. All the participants were ready to fight, even on ice. Preparations got underway in the Kingdom. One of the Forge's craftsmen even came up with a new type of shoe with spikes that prevented the wearer from sliding on the ice. A perfect solution for a snowy winter problem.However, despite the enthusiasm of the soldiers and the citizens, queen Ayrin's heart was still filled with worry. The weren't prepared for a winter like this. The soldiers couldn't deal with the snow that was falling ceaselessly, the blizzards that swept Christmas decorations from the windows, and the growing unease about holding an anniversary tournament in such conditions.For two nights in a row, Ayrin has been having dreams in which she wanders the snow-swept fields of her Kingdom all alone. Above her head hang storm clouds, so rarely seen at this time of year, with lightning ready to burst forth the wrath of the Frozen Queen.Ayrin is awoken by the sound of a blizzard furiously beating against her bedroom window, as if it wanted to break through this invisible obstacle and lock her in its cold embrace, just like in the dream. A chill goes through the queen's body, and she wraps herself even tighter in her warm robe. "I hope it's nothing more than a dream and has nothing to do with this weather," she thinks, glancing through the window at the falling snowflakes. The Arena Cup starts tomorrow.
