General Strategies
- Stay warm and dry. Cover yourself in layers and make sure to stay dry. This is especially important if you are in a cold-weather environment.
- Stay low and out of the wind. Find shelter in a low-lying area, or build a shelter if possible.
- Be aware of your surroundings. Pay attention to any changes in the weather and find a safe place to stay if necessary.
- Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of fluids and eat high-energy foods. If you can't find food, eat snow for water.
- Stay visible. If you are stranded in a white-out, make sure to be visible to rescuers by wearing bright clothing and lighting a fire if possible.
- Know how to use your equipment. Make sure you know how to use your snowshoes, skis, or sled before you venture out.
Navigation Strategies
- Stay on track. If you are in a white-out, it can be easy to lose your way. Mark your trail with sticks, or create a path of rocks. If you have a GPS or compass, use those to stay on track.
- Find natural landmarks. Look for landmarks such as trees, rocks, or streams to help you stay on course.
- Follow the sun. If you can, follow the sun's position to help you determine which direction you are heading.
- Check your map. If you have a map, check it periodically to make sure you are still on the right track.
Safety Strategies
- Be prepared. Pack the necessary items and know how to use them before you head out. This includes a first-aid kit, extra food and water, and a shelter.
