The Enduring Appeal of Gin Rummy
Since the 1930s, Gin Rummy has been a staple in popular American culture, favored by Broadway and Hollywood stars and featured in numerous films. Its blend of skill and strategy has captivated generations, and now you can experience its timeless charm wherever you are.
How to Play Gin Rummy:
The objective of Gin Rummy is to collect "melds," which are sets of three or more cards that go together. Melds can be either cards of the same rank (e.g., three Sevens) or sequences of the same suit (e.g., 7, 8, 9 of Hearts).
Cards remaining in your hand that are not part of any meld are called "deadwood," incurring penalties equal to the sum of their values. Throughout the game, players strive to discard unwanted cards and collect cards that form melds.
Gameplay Mechanics:
- Dealing: Each of two players is dealt 10 cards. The 21st card is placed face-up next to the deck, serving as the "upcard."
- Drawing: At each turn, players draw a card either from the closed deck or the visible upcard.
- Discarding: Players complete their turn by discarding one card from their hand, which then becomes the new upcard. You cannot draw the upcard and discard it in the same turn.
- Initial Choice: At the very start, the non-dealer chooses whether to exchange a card with the upcard or pass. If both players pass the initial upcard, the non-dealer draws from the closed deck.
- Melds: Melds consist of 3 or 4 cards of the same rank, or a sequence of 3 or more cards in the same suit (Ace and King are not consecutive, but Ace and 2 are).
- Ending a Hand:
- Gin: A hand consisting entirely of melds with no deadwood. This earns a bonus.
- Knocking: A player can end the hand when the total value of their unmatched deadwood is 10 or less. This is done by 'knocking' after drawing an 11th card and before discarding the final card, which is placed face up on the closed stock.
