"In the end of 1984, the leading Soviet magazine Chess In The USSR published a big article about the first game of the world championship match Capablanca-Alekhine, Buenos Aires 1927. The author, master V. Goldin (no relation the U.S. grandmaster Alex Goldin) questioned many decisions by two legendary champions. Many chess players and analysts, including the famous coach Mark Dvoretsky, participated in the lengthy discussion. It is difficult to imagine such an "analysts b...attle" today. Don't people have pretty much the same chess engine in their computers? An amazing point is that this game, which was played almost 60 years ago, is still interesting and relevant for the chess community. Actually, close analysis and discussion was quite common in that bygone era. There were only a couple of super-tournaments each year, and every game played by elite players was something special. Such games were analyzed and re-analyzed for decades. It is quite different these days. When you have two super-tournaments per month, it is very difficult to follow them, let alone deeply analyze the games. One of the sad consequences of this situation is many very instructive games and positions simply vanish from memory, being pushed away by the avalanche of new games that arrive every week." "1. Opposition The concept itself is easily understood and lucidly defined in chess literature 'opposition is the state of two kings standing on the same file with one square separating them (close opposition; three or five squares between is called distant opposition); the opposition may be vertical, horizontal, or diagonal' (Mark Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual). Provided that your opponent has no pawn moves to spare, gaining the opposition usually induces zugzwang and forc...es a decisive concession. In practice, of course, things are anything but cut-and-dried." Read the full article here Freebie Link

"Here are picks for the six moves all chess players should play at least once before they die. 1. Smothered Mate If you've never seen this checkmating pattern before, you're in for a treat.... For many players, the smothered mate delivered by the knight after a double-check and queen sacrifice is the pinnacle of chess beauty. I remember the first time I ever saw this mate, I couldn't believe it. Playing it to win an actual game is even more exciting, but it's fairly difficult to achieve. Not only do you have to set up the mate, you also have to hope your opponent dutifully plays it out and allows you to finish with a flourish." Continue reading here Freebie Link

"If you have seen the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer, you may remember one of the Washington Square Park hustlers who held a sign offering a photograph or a game with the man who beat Mikhail Tal. Just like most of the movie's chess characters, this guy really existed. His name was Josif Israel Zilber. Here is what the movie's Wikipedia page says about him:... 'The Russian player in the park (played by Vasek Simek) [...] was based on the real life of Israel Zilber. Zilber, Latvian Chess Champion in 1958, defeated the teenage Mikhail Tal in 1952, and during most of the 1980s was homeless and regarded as one of the top players in Washington Square Park.' After reading this short paragraph, you might get the impression that Zilber was bragging about beating Mikhail Tal once, maybe when 'The Magician' was just 16 years old. The reality was different. The first time these two players met was in 1949, when Tal was just 13 years old and Zilber (born June 25, 1933) was 16 years old." Continue reading here Freebie Link

Principle 1 - Activity "Winning material is an important aspect of chess, but it is not the most important part. Oftentimes, factors like initiative, coordination, and activity do compensate for being a pawn or two down. Surprisingly, endgames aren't an exception. Even in the final stage of the game, material does not always prevail. ... The second point that I want to make is about king safety. We think of a king as a piece that needs to be protected at all times since mating a king is the one and only objective of the chess game. Yes, it is true that a king more often than not should not be left alone. This mostly refers to opening and middlegame when there are plenty of pieces on the board. However, the king becomes a fighting piece in the endgame, and it often needs to be directed towards the center of the board to make a change!" Learn more rook endgame principles here Freebie Link

"Chess is a game of dramatic possibility. Within a few moves, the number of potential positions is in the millions. Soon, there are more permutations than a human could count in a lifetime. This is well known; you sometimes hear that there are more chess moves than molecules in the universe. Still, it always surprises me. Even when players follow theory 20 moves deep, chances are that at some point, someone will make a new move.... Novelty is not the point here. Nor is it likely a new strategic philosophy. The same double helix of logic -- move connected to countermove -- has been encoded in games for hundreds of years. But inevitably, a mutation appears." Continue reading here Freebie Link

"Let's tackle the problem of how to think in chess. The topic is not as ridiculous as it sounds. What I'm really talking about is a static and general mode of thinking vs. a dynamic and specific one. Players in the 1600-2000 skill range have generally mastered the strategic fundamentals of openings, middlegames, and endgames and are aware of these principles during their games. ... However, the problem that plagues many players at this level and prevents them from improving further is that they think only in terms of these general principles. Listen to a postmortem between two class players after a tournament game. You will hear many generalities, e.g. 'Well I thought if I put my knight in the center, it will later be useful in an attack.''Yes, but I thought if I saddle you with an isolated pawn, I can take advantage of it in the endgame.' The discussion consists almost entirely of general ideas that apply in any position. Do you see what's missing from the analysis? Specific lines. In contrast, listen to two masters analyzing, and you will hear both of them spouting moves and variations. It's not that general principles don't apply beyond a certain level; it's that stronger players apply these principles according to the specific needs of the position."
